What Is Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse refers to incidents or patterns of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading, and violent behaviour, including sexual violence. It is often perpetrated by a partner or ex-partner but can also involve family members or carers12.
Domestic abuse can take many forms, including:
- Physical abuse: Hitting, slapping, punching, or any other form of physical harm.
- Emotional or psychological abuse: Intimidation, threats, constant criticism, or undermining someone’s self-esteem.
- Sexual abuse: Any non-consensual sexual activity.
- Financial or economic abuse: Controlling someone’s finances, withholding money, or preventing them from working.
- Coercive control: A pattern of behaviour that seeks to take away the victim’s liberty or freedom and strip away their sense of self12.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, there are resources and support available. In the UK, you can contact the National Domestic Abuse Helpline for free and confidential advice 24 hours a day2.
